The closest thing we got to comic relief in the excruciating presidential debate Friday night was Barack Obama playing "me too" to John McCain's wearing of a bracelet with a fallen American GI's name on it. He obviously couldn't remember the poor soul's name (Sgt. Ryan David Jopek) and had to take a look at it to refresh his memory. See for yourself here.
Now, it turns out, the family of the Sgt. Jopek, who support our efforts in Iraq, has asked Obama to stop wearing the bracelet but he has yet to comply. Jopek's mother says when she gave it to him, she "just wanted it to be something between Barack Obama and herself." Poor, naive woman; don't hold your breath waiting to see this reported in the New York Times.
UPDATE: Not so, apparently: the mother of Sgt. Jopek, an Obama supporter, doesn't object to Obama wearing the bracelet. She is also okay with him bringing it up during the debate because McCain broached up the subject.
